The third part of Swenson's essay has to do with Kierkegaard's book Either/Or which was published under the pseudonym Victor Eremita on February 20, 1843. Either/Or was about choosing to live a life devoted to pleasure or to live an ethical life based on Christian principles. Soren Kierkegaard published fourteen separate books in the years 1843 and 1844. Either/Or was the one the scholars paid attention to. Many of Kierkegaard's works were translated into German between 1877 and 1888 according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica 1910.
